True Words, Lasting Impact

Ever have someone say something in passing that sticks with you? Sometimes those words have unintended consequences. Sometimes those words make us look in the mirror and make a change. Below comes from a PAX in F3 Black Swamp (OH).

"I thought you would be more fit by now." Nearly two years have passed since these nine words were uttered in my direction one gloomy Saturday morning, and they still ring in my ears.

Some of you might be thinking, what sort of punk would say such a thing to someone else? In fact, about a year ago I reminded the PAX that he said this to me and he had the same reaction!

The thing is though that the moment these words were said it was in the middle of a beatdown and I was near the middle of the pack. This PAX was well aware of how involved I was in F3 and my active participation. At the time, I was posting 3-4 times a week. When these words were spoken, he was simply vocalizing what he was seeing. He was openly calling me out on my effort, or the lack thereof. These words were not spoken out of hate or anger. They were not spoken with mal intent. They were not intended to belittle me or to crush my ego. To me, it was an honest observation regarding my lack of physical growth.

What one person thought was an off-handed comment was a very insightful description of not just my lack of improvement physically but also summed up my idleness in other areas of my life.

I was going through the motions of participating. I earned every participation award that was offered. I have the t-shirts to prove it. The problem was that I wasn't improving. I wasn't pushing myself to get better, faster, stronger and more fit. I would try just hard enough to get by. I would do just enough to keep up. I would put forth just enough effort to satisfy the objective and cross the finish line.

These words have encouraged me over the last two years to create life goals. In 2023, I made the decision to "do hard stuff." What that meant to me was that I was going to force myself to do things that would normally have made me uncomfortable. "Doing hard stuff" meant that I was going to participate in Iron PAX, CSAUPs and any other physically challenging events. "Doing hard stuff" wasn't limited to physical activities. I noticed that I was living out other parts of my life with the same mediocre effort that I was putting into my fitness activities. So, by making the decision to "do hard stuff," this also meant that I would commit to read my Bible more, pray more, take more chances, spend more quality time with my kids and say "yes" more often. In 2024 I decided to add serving more to my list of hard stuff.

There is certainly room for improvement, so don’t for a second think that I am now perfect in each of these areas. I could always find room for improvement. There are always challenges in life that would be easy to ignore, but I've decided that I want to be more physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually fit and that I don't ever want someone to think that I should "be more fit by now" in any area of my life.

Don’t be afraid to call someone out. Hold each other accountable. Speak the truth in love. Push each other to be HIM.

Raising the Next Generation of Leaders

On the heels of Father's Day, we are reminded the impact we have on our children. Dwarf from F3 Pensacola (FL) shared this message on Slack. His son is set up for success because men around him care enough to pour in to him. The future is bright, gentlemen!

Accountability (Q-2.5)

Submission To Standard Through Enforcement and Consequence

  • The HIM seeks Accountability because his life is not his own
  • Accountability shines the light of Hope into a man’s Blind Spots
  • An Effective Shield Lock provides mutual Accountability

True Accountability starts with a Standard, which is an objective measure of performance or behavior. To be Effective, it must be inarguable. If it contains any subjective wiggle-room then it is not a Standard.

Enforcement is an external force that applies a Standard. A Standard without Enforcement is like a nail without a hammer. It avails nothing. Enforcement requires the intercession of another person to measure one’s actual performance or behavior against the Standard he previously agreed to set for it. No man can hold himself Accountable.

Shame is something people naturally wish to avoid. Like other Consequences, it is an unwanted result that follows a failure to meet a Standard. If a man does not feel at least some Shame from the Enforcement of a Standard that he has failed to meet, than that Standard probably does not mean that much to him.
